E-SESSION: KARL + ANNA

Jay Jay Lucas & Feliz Diestro chats with Vatel Manila about the concepts behind the wacky yet romantic engagement session of Karl & Anna. :-)

---
Tell us about the concept of this shoot:

Jay Jay Lucas: Will let Feliz answer this, he he!

Feliz Diestro: I make it a point that every concept i create for my couples are not unique but a true reflection of who they are and the best that they can be. For me to do this, i sort of have a personality test! It’s like answering a slum book, and then we formulate the perfect concept for them. Karl and Anna had sooo many requests in mind and it was my job to dissect and discern which are feasible and perfect for them. :-)

---
Look 1: Pearl Harbor

It was Karl & Anna's special request that we hold the prenup at Villamor Airbase after a loooooot of location selections, ha ha! Anna wanted to look feminine for the prenup so dressing her up plus the perfect hair and makeup will bring out the lady in her.
---

---
Look 2: Spunky Outfit

It was another request that they have lots and lots of balloons and since we get this request often, we thought of putting a twist to this so we came up with a BIG balloon and a lot of colorful medium-sized balloons plus a vintage-picnic look (which i often receive as pegs). Our color palette was silver and grey so I placed together vintage elements and modernized it a bit like the trains, bag and Anna's shoes. I modernized it with Karl's tie, polo w/ shorts.

---
Look 3: Tribal Bohemian

Since the fashion forecast this season is Bohemian, we tribalized it a bit with the design and beadwork in Iya's dress.

Basically their concept was a mixture of everything they liked and everything about them. They can be serious yet quirky at the same time. They can be glamorous and relaxed as well. :) It’s our goal to receive comments like "That’s so you!!!” as compared to "Hindi kita namukhaan!" all because it’s an engagement shoot which should focus on the couple's love and joy. :)

Tell us about finding the right clothes for this shoot.

Jay Jay: We first took note of the personality of Karl and Anna and then we created concepts that they both liked and were willing to do, and then Feliz came up with outfit pegs that guided them as they shopped for their outfits.

Feliz: Karl and Anna availed of my Superstar Package. This included a Mood Board and 3 wardrobe layouts. I do this so that the couple can minimize cost and check their closet for possible items they may have and only purchase the items they don’t (and wish to) have. Most of the clothes used are from the ukay ukay (rummage store). There's an ukay store with lots of good finds along Cubao. They opted to scout for the items themselves which they enjoyed very much. I like it when couples do this; they also go through experiencing how to respond to each other and how they can both decide and prepare for bigger decisions together after the wedding and during the marriage.
---

---
How do you make couples feel comfortable?

Jay Jay: I like cracking a joke here and there, do minor directing, and encourage couples to enjoy every bit of the shoot and just hang loose. :-)

Feliz: I think it’s important to always ask questions and let them talk. Instead of me talking, I let them share what's in their minds. Also, I have a portable speaker with me to set the mood. Jay, on the other hand, is very natural. I guess since the couple sees that he's relaxed and jokes around they, too, get relaxed and enjoy the moment.
---

---
Why was an airfield chosen for this particular shoot?

Jay Jay: It was the AFP Museum. It was chosen because the couple liked a venue with airplanes.

Feliz: Couple's preference.
---

---
How is shooting in a location like this any different from, say, a destination venue?

Jay Jay: It was a challenge actually because it was pretty plain and bare. It made me stretch my imagination and chop up the place visually to make it look interesting.

Feliz: It’s like the saying - the right guy at the wrong time is not the right guy at all so even if you have a great destination venue but you have poor execution, the outcome won’t be extraordinary but if you put the perfect concept which fits the couple with the right location to compliment the mood and the execution of the idea, then you’ve won yourself the perfect trophy any supplier longs for - a satisfied client.

---
Your favorite elements?

Jay Jay: I loved the vintage stuff like the old suitcase and the quirky items like the cake, the train set, the nerdy glasses and the BIG balloon!

Feliz: The cake fight! That Karl was okay with getting dirtied, ha ha!
---

---
Highlight of the shoot:

Jay Jay: The cake fight! Crazy fun!

Feliz: Popping balloons when they hit the grass and inside the chopper, ha ha! And the cake fight because everyone were simply laughing their hearts out!
---

---
Favorite memory of this day?

Jay Jay: That Karl agreed to have his face splattered with the cake!

Feliz: Still the cake fight, ha ha!
---

---
Your wish for the couple?

Jay Jay: I wish that they enjoy their wedding day like they did their e-session and most importantly, to keep the foundation of their marriage very strong.

Feliz: That they will never stop learning about each other.
---

---
Tips to couples on how to prepare for an e-session:

Jay Jay: Research on concepts and pegs that' are unique and would suit your personality. Prepare for the shoot together like shopping for the items, pay attention to details, hang loose on the prenup day and trust your photographer. For the grooms: It's your time to shine also so be involved and break a leg! Your fiancé will appreciate it much :D

Feliz: Remember that an engagement is sort of a pre-celebration of your wedding declaration so it’s never about getting it perfect but making it memorable.
